Becoming a Soccer Fan Pt. 4: Checking in with Aston Villa F.C.

The holidays have come and gone and that means more time for my new obsession, English League Championship soccer! Since our last ‘Becoming A Soccer Fan’ article, the team has found success and defeat and we’ll talk about both in Becoming A Soccer Fan Pt. 4: Checking in with Aston Villa F. C.

The Good: We’ve gone 2-1-1 since our loss to Derby County in the English League Championship, including a 5-0 shellacking of Bristol City, and that leaves us in 5th place. We’ve got a great shot at qualifying for the promotional playoffs as long as we keep our record positive and post favorable score lines the rest of the season.

The Bad: We’ve gone 2-1-1 since our loss to Derby County, and with the squad we’re fielding that means we’re underachieving.¬†Many thought we would be competing for the top two spots in the league this season, and we’ve fallen short of that considering we’re still lagging behind Derby County and the Wolverhampton Wanderers. There is still time to possibly overtake Derby County, I believe, but the Wanderers might be just out of reach.

The Bad Pt.2: The Football Association Cup, or FA Cup, is a tournament that occurs annually and allows clubs from the lower tiers of domestic play to face off in a grand tournament against¬†competition of all stripes, including the top-flight teams from the Premier League. The FA Cup rewards the winning side with a cash prize and bragging rights, and Aston Villa bombed out after an embarrassing 1-3 loss to Peterborough. They are a League One football club which means they are below the English League Championship level of play. We’ll try and forget about this misstep by getting promoted at the end of this season and hoping we can elevate our play.

The Way Ahead: Nottingham Forest versus Aston Villa on Saturday, 1/13/2018, at 12:30 PM EST. Check it out as best you can and leave me a comment if you’re following the action!
