After 32 Games, the Caps are in First Place!

If you’re a Washington hockey fan you are no doubt familiar with RMNB ( They’re a local site grown organically by some fans and I absolutely advocate for supporting them. They bring tons of quality hockey content and are a good “citizen” in our hockey community (not to mention a quality Twitter follow @russianmachine).

For those less familiar with the Caps and with hockey, the team has done very well the last few years. In fact they’ve had the best record in hockey each of the last two regular seasons. The playoffs, however, haven’t gone as well and, in total desperation, the Caps went all-in on the 2016-2017 campaign. It didn’t work out and the stupid Penguins won the Stanley Cup again. In the off season, most analysts agreed that the Caps’ window had closed. Since current captain Alexander Ovechkin joined the team as the number one overall selection in the 2004 draft, the Capitals have generally enjoyed a lot of success, but the tone seemed a little darker, more grim this off season.

This brings us to the amazing shirt seen below and its origin. Back in the preseason, Ovi was asked how he expected his team to do this year and, the Great 8, speaks English well, but it’s not always particularly polished. He said, “We’re not going to be suck this year” and a legion of adoring fans loved it! RMNB put the famous words on a shirt and it’s been incredibly popular, but yesterday news broke that Ovechkin himself was seen wearing the shirt last night after the Caps beat the Avalanche 5-2 and pulled even with Columbus atop the Metropolitan Division standings.

The Caps have had their issues this year—as one would expect with the departure of several veterans that has given way to a bit of a youth movement—but they’re playing hard and have experienced an uptick in success the last few weeks. If we’ve learned anything the last few years it’s that you can’t put too much stock into the lengthy regular season, but the Eastern Conference is deep and confidence is important too.

Nearing the half way point of the 2017-2018 season I think you have to say that the prophecy has come true: We’re NOT going to be suck this year!!!
